Here are the top 5 overall bad moves candidates should try and avoid:
1. Addressing your application to “Dear recruiter” – If there is an individual’s name on the job posting then address it to them accordingly. By addressing it to “Human Resources” or “Recruiter” it shows you have not read the advertisement thoroughly. If there is no name on the job posting, call the company and ask the Receptionist if they know who the individual is that is managing that vacancy. It shows you are eager and resourceful.
2. Applying to every role posted – It is important that you are specific in your job search. Only apply to roles that match your background and fall into your short-term or long-term career goals. Applying to every role gives the perception that you are confused and unfocused.
3. Not remembering what positions you’ve applied for – Sometimes there are a couple of positions that you apply for that are similar (because they are related to your background and you aren’t applying to every role posted, remember!), write down which position you applied for and with what company. That way when you do get a call from ABC Company, you know why they are calling and are prepared to discuss your candidacy. When you call someone with regards to their application and they do not recognize your company name, it can be very alarming because they should remember where they sent their résumé.
4. Errors on cover letters; wrong name, spelling or wrong position - This can often be frustrating for the reader. Attention to detail is very important in almost every position, so you should double check; if not triple check your application and have a second set of eyes look it over.
5. Arrive with no paper, pen or a copy of your résumé – We always have a copy of your résumé but you should take a copy along as well, you should know your résumé inside and out but this will help if you stumble on a detail. It shows the person you are meeting with that you are prepared, organized and eager. Not bringing along a pen or paper simply does not make sense, how can you remember all the details about the position you’ve just heard about. It’s okay to make notes during the interview, it’s welcomed as it shows again you’re truly interested in the position.
There is a lot to remember when applying for job opportunities but We hope this helps!
